This course is currently only being held remotely as a private group course via GoToTraining as a Live Online Learning session. Contact us for availability and pricing, or see our Private and Tailored IT Group Courses page for more information. Power BI Desktop Fundamentals - What you will learn

Course Overview

Currently all of our classroom sessions have been suspended until we receive further government guidance. We have converted this classroom course into an interactive live webinar, delivered via GoToMeeting by one of our expert trainers.

This is an intensive one-day online course consisting of four 90-minute live online sessions with independent work and breaks in between, for those who prefer to learn at a fast pace.

We recommend taking our Power BI Desktop Fundamentals 2 day course, which allows more time for practicing your new skills.

What you will learn

This workshop builds a report based on importing data from Excel with simple calculations such as average age and average salary of employees, sliced by department/location and looking at top 10 earners.

We start with a brief introduction to self service business intelligence and the Power BI suite of tools.

  • Overview of the Power BI tools
  • Overview of the various types of data that can be imported into Power BI
  • Preview of the example dashboard report we will create during the training

The main part of the morning looks at the Power BI Desktop, how to connect to data sources and ‘clean up’ data:

  • Desktop interface: overview of Ribbon and the Report, Data and Model views
  • Connecting to various data sources
  • Use Query Editor to ‘clean’ and filter data, such as removing rows, find and replacing incorrect spellings, splitting data into separate columns
  • Saving, editing and deleting queries
  • Saving, editing and deleting with query ‘Steps’
  • Creating Calculated Columns using Power Query
  • Refreshing data
  • Saving a pbix file

An important part of the workshop is to understand Data Modelling, which includes:

  • How to build a simple Data Model by creating a relationship between two different data sources
  • How to create simple DAX measures for summary calculations

Next, we focus on creating, formatting, moving and deleting interactive visualisations including:

  • Charts
  • Tables
  • Slicers

And we finish by sharing tips on how to format your report including:

  • Applying and customising a theme
  • Including text boxes, shapes, a company logo and a background

A full PDF manual is provided, together with follow up exercises so that you can continue your learning.

The Small Print

For Live Online Interactive Learning sessions (webinars)

The course will run remotely for a full day consisting of four 90-minute live online sessions with independent work in between.

All learners will need to either install GoToTraining on their machines or use the Web App in a browser (either Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge are supported). Full technical requirements are on the GoTo websiteYour link will be included in your joining instructions once you have booked your place — if you haven't received this email then please contact our team.

Learners should log into the training session 10 minutes before the start time to ensure that they have downloaded and set up GoTo correctly. The course will start precisely on time and it may not be possible to go back over material missed by late arrivals.

Your active participation is expected: everyone will be heard and seen throughout, just as they would be if we were in a room together. To be heard, hear and seen you will need a microphone, speakers and camera – if you have a modern laptop that’s all you will need. Remember, you’ll need a quiet place to call from and a decent internet connection is a must.

Please ensure you read our Terms and Conditions before booking for our payment terms and cancellation policy.

For classroom sessions

This course will run from 10am to 4:45pm (lunch is served 1pm to 1:45pm — we offer a choice of 3 cold bowl dishes) on both days. Please be careful to arrive by 9:45am for registration and refreshments. The course will start precisely on time and it may not be possible to go back over material missed by late arrivals.
