MS Visio 2010 Essentials

By the end of the course you will be confident in using the essential features of Visio to create connected multi-layered diagrams. Delegates must be confident in using Windows and a mouse. This course is for anyone who has never used Visio before (or any other graphics package).  This course is especially useful if you are involved in any of the following; mapping process flow diagrams, organisation charts, network diagrams, software design or scaled diagrams i.e. room layouts.

Course Requirements

Delegates must be confident in using Windows and a mouse. This course is designed for PC users of Microsoft Visio 2010. It is also available for users of Visio 2013 – please ensure you attend the course that is appropriate for your version of Visio.

What You Will Learn

In particular you will be able to:

  • Open templates and stencils
  • Understand the layout of the drawing window and how to zoom
  • Format shapes and text
  • Use foreground and background pages to produce consistent layouts
  • Connect shapes using connector tools
  • Create basic flowcharts, process flowcharts and organisation charts
  • Create hyperlinks between pages and save your drawings for use on an intranet or internet

Session 1

Start a New File; Describe the differences between a stencil, template and drawing; Find and use other stencils; Select shapes placed on the page; Resize shapes placed on a page; Zoom in and out.

Session 2

Use the different drawing tools; Move, Copy and Resize shapes; Add text to shapes; Format text; Add Text To Lines; Size And Position shapes on the drawing page.

Session 3

Copy shapes using three different techniques; Adjust the position and angle of text added to shapes; Insert new pages; Reorder pages; Create foreground and background pages; Rename pages; Glue one shape to another; Saving file for use outside Visio.

Session 4

Know how to use different connector types; Connect shapes together using: The Connector Tool, The Connect Shapes button, Drag and Drop; Align shapes and distribute shapes equally; Understand what guides are for and how to add them.


The course will run from 10am to 4:45pm (light cold buffet 1pm to 1:45pm). Please be careful to arrive by 9.45am for registration and refreshments. The course will start precisely on time and it may not be possible to go back over material missed by late arrivals. If you arrive over 30 minutes late you may be asked to leave and attend another day.
