Excel for Intermediate Users

This intermediate course is for anyone who has used Excel before and is confident with creating basic formulas e.g., adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. In this intermediate Excel course, you will learn time-saving techniques including Absolute Cell References e.g., a multiplication that involves a fixed figure (such as VAT) and requires two-dollar signs (e.g., $B$4).  You will explore more Conditional Formatting Settings, use Range Names and several functions e.g., IF, SumIFs, and CountIFs to analyse your data.

You will also learn how to create a basic Pivot Table to summarise large sets of data quickly and easily.

    Learners must have used Excel before and be familiar with using formulae for calculations that add, subtract, multiply and divide.

Course Overview

This Excel for Intermediate Users course can be held either in the classroom or online as Live Online Learning. The outline for both formats is the same, however the classroom session offers more time with the trainer to work on exercises, ask questions and complete activities.

What you will learn

By the end of this intermediate level course, you will be able to:

  • Recap on formulas and functions such as AVERAGE, MIN (minimum) and MAX (maximum) to create statistical information.
  • Create a calculation based on a condition. e.g., add a £10 bonus to all staff who have achieved results above target and keep the target value fixed (absolute) when copied in order to save time.
  • Manually create a Range Name to refer to a cell, for example ‘VAT’ rather than using a Cell address e.g., B2 to make them easier to read and work with
  • Setup a Data Validation Dropdown list where you can pick from a list of values which limits the type of data that can be entered into a cell.
  • Count entries if they meet a condition. e.g., count the number of customers who live in specific city.
  • Create and work on more than one worksheet and group them to make changes simultaneously.
  • Link formulas across Worksheets to create a Summary sheet.
  • Use Conditional Formatting to automatically change the look of cells depending on
  • their value e.g., Above Average and Below Average.
  • Create an Excel Table and use it to analyse data.
  • Create a basic Pivot Table and Pivot Chart to summarise large sets of data easily.

  • Using multiple sheets (duplicating sheets, moving, renaming, linking across sheets)

  • Conditional Formatting (Above Average, Below Average)
  • Copying and Pasting to different applications e.g. Word

Introduction to Pivot Tables and Pivot Charts

  • Creating an Excel Table (Table Tools)

  • Editing the Calculation Type
  • Rearranging your Pivot Table
  • Creating Pivot Charts

This course will be taught in the latest version of the software. We can train this in older versions if needed – please get in touch for more information and availability.

For Live Online Interactive Learning sessions (webinars)

The course will run remotely for a full day consisting of three 90-minute live online sessions with independent work in between. 

All learners will need to install Zoom on their machines. Full technical requirements are on the Zoom website. Your link will be included in your joining instructions once you have booked your place — if you haven't received this email then please contact our team.

Learners should log into the training session 10 minutes before the start time to ensure that they have downloaded and set up Zoom correctly. The course will start precisely on time and it may not be possible to go back over material missed by late arrivals.

For classroom sessions

All public classroom sessions take place at Happy's HQ in London at Robert Dolan House, 9 Alie Street, London E1 8DE. Please see our Contact Us page for full directions and a PDF map.

The course will run from 10am to 4:45pm (lunch is served 1pm to 1:45pm — we offer a choice of 3 cold bowl dishes). Please be careful to arrive by 9:45am for registration and refreshments. The course will start precisely on time and it may not be possible to go back over material missed by late arrivals. If you arrive over 30 minutes late you may be asked to leave and attend another day.
