Introduction to Power BI Desktop

This one-day workshop is an introduction to Power BI Desktop, the Microsoft tool that enables data from various sources to be ‘mashed together’ to create insightful reports.

Learners do not need to have used Power BI before, though you should be comfortable using Excel to an intermediate level.

Course Requirements

Learners do not need any prior knowledge of Power BI, but must be comfortable using Microsoft Excel to an intermediate level. You must be confident creating Pivot Tables and advanced formula (such as If and CountIf). If you do not feel confident with this, we recommend that you take our Excel Core Level 2 course first.

People with Database, Programming, or other BI experience are also suitable for this course even if they don’t have direct Excel experience.

Getting started with Power BI Desktop and connecting to data sources

  • Desktop interface: overview of Ribbon and QAT

  • Use Query Editor to ‘clean’ and filter data, such as removing rows, find and replacing incorrect spellings, splitting data into separate columns
  • Saving, editing and deleting queries
  • Saving, editing and deleting with query ‘Steps’

  • Building the Data Model by creating relationships between the different data sources

The course runs 10am to 4:30pm (hot buffet lunch 1pm to 1:45pm). Please be careful to arrive by 9:45am for registration and refreshments. The course will start precisely on time and it may not be possible to go back over material missed by late arrivals. If you arrive over 20 minutes late you may be asked to leave and attend another day.

Ed Lepre

Ed is a Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT) and has worked at Happy for over 12 years. Although he trains the full suite of MS Office and non-Office packages at all levels, his favourite package is Excel. A previous winner of the prestigious Learning and Performance Institute's 'Learning Professional of the Year' award, as well as other training accolades, he is also the IT Helpline Manager.
