Case Study: Teenage Cancer Trust

Initially, Happy were engaged for the purpose of creating materials for a straightforward IT training and culture change project. After the initial scoping exercise, Happy redesigned pre-existing, standard content to help staff at Teenage Cancer Trust use the new and improved technology available to improve their working lives. It evolved into a project where Happy worked with multiple company figureheads and departments to refine and deploy an evolved training course, to a company-wide audience.

Labelled as IT Surgeries, the IT team at TCT had initially wanted to run the sessions themselves, however the team wanted the expertise of a training company to help design something for them which they could then deliver. It was to be a course based around training the company team on new tools, while also changing culture and behaviour within the business.

Happy initially carried out a scoping exercise, wherein Happy’s trainers spent the day meeting key stakeholders, including the IT Manager, SharePoint Manager and key members from each department. Following this, the stakeholders and ourselves came up with a list of shared objectives. This included a rethink of the SharePoint approach, while also innovating several new objectives which would change how people would use the new technology to improve their working lives. The target audience for the project also shifted to encompass the IT team, who had originally intended to run the training themselves, to give them a chance to ask and answer questions at the end, thus further imparting their core goals.

The initial objectives were:

  • To present key messages to the company about the positive changes in the IT department
  • To alter specific certain behaviours as to remove obstacles to the team’s smooth working
  • To introduce Office 365 tools (particularly OneDrive and Skype for Business)
  • To encourage a discussion around best practice in communications, particularly in terms of using instant messenger in Skype for Business. Combining this with considerate and effective behaviours.
  • To enthuse people about the new tools as they related to their working setup (many were remote workers)

Happy’s trainers and course developers worked closely with Jacob Asare, of the the IT team, to create a pitch for senior management. The teams then worked with senior management, in a collective brainstorming session, to work towards a final, refined, course plan. Feedback and changes from the sessions were implemented to create the final course.

The final, refined training course was then delivered to staff across the country at regional offices as well as in the London office.

The training was delivered to staff across the country at regional offices as well as in the London office.

Susie Golics, who originally commissioned the work at Teenage Cancer Trust, said recently that staff are now using Skype for Business and OneDrive much more regularly since the training. The delegates on their post-course evaluation forms gave the training a work relevance score of 90% (based on standard measures of Good or Excellent).
