Web Accessibility Issues

This course is for anyone who is responsible for commissioning or managing a web site that must meet the W3C accessibility guidelines or anyone who wants to understand web accessibility issues generally.

Aims

By the end of the course, you will have a working knowledge of the key W3C level 1 accessibility issues, be able to brief your developers and get your site accredited.

What you will learn

In particular you will be able to:

  • Identify the environments and audiences that should be accommodated in your site design and construction.
  • Access and understand the implications of the W3C accessibility Guidelines.
  • Separate structural and content accessibility issues.

  • Confidently brief your developers or technical team.
  • Test your site for accessibility compliance.
  • Apply for accreditation from relevant standards bodies.


Requirements

No technical knowledge is required however delegates must be very confident in using Windows and a mouse and with using Internet Explorer or another browser.


Timetable

Session 1

Accessibility for all: A hands on look at accessibility issues faced by web surfers and the W3C accessibility guidelines that should keep all our sites accessible to all.

Session 2

Key Content Issues: An exploration of the guidelines relevant to making your site’s content, organisation and basic design accessible to all.

Session 3

Key Technical Issues: A non-technical look at the guidelines relating to site construction including basic problems and solutions when working with; images, page layout and navigation.

Session 4

Briefing your developers & Accreditation: How to brief your developers of in house team, testing you site for accessibility compliance and getting accreditation.

The ‘Small Print’

The course will run from 10am to 4:45pm (light cold buffet 1pm to 1:45pm). Please be careful to arrive by 9.45am for registration and refreshments. The course will start precisely on time and it may not be possible to go back over material missed by late arrivals. If you arrive over 30 minutes late you may be asked to leave and attend another day.
