This course is for anyone responsible for their web site, who wants to track and monitor its performance – to improve its effectiveness.
Aims
By the end of the course, you will be confident in using Google Analytics for a comprehensive analysis of the performance of your web site.
What you will learn
In particular you will be able to:
- Use Google Analytics to track visits to your site.
- Understand the different measures & what they mean.
- Drill down and discover where visitors come from, what they search on, what they read and what turns them off.
- Export reports to Excel for more analysis and as PDFs to give to others.
- Set goals for your site and measure conversion.
- Produce automatic reports to go out by email at set intervals.
- Create a report customised to your needs, giving you the information you want in the format you need.
Requirements
Delegates must be confident in using the internet. Ideally you should bring the login details for Google Analytics for your site, and have the tracking script installed on your site, to enable this course to be personalised to your needs.
Timetable
Session 1
Introduction to Analytics
First glance: Analytics for a sample site and for your site.
Why use analytics? What you can track and what you can’t.
Understanding the jargon: Visits, Page Views, Bounce Rates.
Session 2
Basic Reporting
Standard Reports: Visitors, Traffic, Content.
Where people come from, which keywords they searched for, which pages are most popular, which pages cause them to leave, how long they stay.
Exporting reports (XML, PDF, CSV for Excel).
Session 3
Setting & Tracking Goals
What is a goal? What are your goals?
Understanding and measuring conversion.
Session 4
Automating & Customising Reports
Automated email reporting – getting regular standard reports.
Custom dashboard, custom reports: Setting content, time periods, key measures.
Optional: Installing the Google tracking script on your site.
The ‘Small Print’
The course will run from 10am to 4:45pm (light cold buffet 1pm to 1:45pm). Please be careful to arrive by 9.45am for registration and refreshments. The course will start precisely on time and it may not be possible to go back over material missed by late arrivals. If you arrive over 30 minutes late you may be asked to leave and attend another day.
