Quark Xpress 8 Essentials

This course is for anyone who has never used QuarkXPress before (or any other Desk Top Publishing software. Please feel free to bring in simple documents that you can use as a reference/work on whilst you are here - (if there is time).

Aims

At the end of this course you will be familiar with the basics of Desk Top Publishing, and be able to produce simple spreads using Quark Xpress. The main focus of the course is on the typesetting features of Quark, rather than the word processing features.

What you will learn

In particular you will be able to:

  • Set the structure for a multi-page document.
  • Import text files, for instance from a word processor.
  • Edit and enhance text.

  • Set re-usable styles for text.
  • Import and manipulate graphic images.


Requirements

Delegates need no prior knowledge of Desktop Publishing, but must be computer literate, happy with using directories and have a sound knowledge of Windows software. Experience of basic word processing is recommended.

Session 1

Introduction to DTP Overview, Mouse & Menu techniques, Main Screen: Tools & Palettes, Setting Preferences, Using Help, Open, Save & Print.

Session 2

Creating Text Boxes Formatting Text, Cut, Copy, Paste and Duplicate. Text Editing, Basic Text Editing & Movement Keys.

Session 3

Drawing Lines: Drawing, Resizing & Deleting Lines, Setting Line Specifications & Styles, Paragraph Rules, Imported Graphics: Creating, Reshaping & Deleting Picture Boxes, Importing Graphics.

Session 4

Preparing your document for printing.

Session 5

Page Setup & Master Pages, Page Setup, Layout View, Creating Master Pages, Setting Automatic Page Numbering, Using Format Guidelines.

Session 6

Importing Text, Creating Text Boxes, Linking & Unlinking Text Boxes Across Pages, Manipulating Text Boxes.

Session 7

Style sheets: Creating, Editing & Deleting Styles, Setting Character Attributes & Paragraph Formats.

Session 8

Templates & Libraries: Using and Creating Templates and Libraries.

The ‘Small Print’

The course will run from 10am to 4:45pm (light cold buffet 1pm to 1:45pm). Please be careful to arrive by 9.45am for registration and refreshments. The course will start precisely on time and it may not be possible to go back over material missed by late arrivals. If you arrive over 30 minutes late you may be asked to leave and attend another day.
