Excel 2007/2010 Essentials

This course is for anyone who has never used Excel before (or any other spreadsheet package) or has some experience but is unfamiliar with using the software to perform calculations and create charts.

Aims

By the end of the course, you will be confident in using the essential features of Excel to create and alter simple spreadsheets, using formulae.

What you will learn

In particular you will be able to:

  • Familiarise with the new screen, such as the Ribbon at the top of the window.
  • Create, save, close, open and print spreadsheets.
  • Insert and delete rows or columns in your spreadsheet.
  • Get Excel to automatically add up numbers using AutoComplete.
  • Copy formulae in your spreadsheet whilst keeping one of the cell references constant.
  • Alter the look of the numbers and text, to make parts of the spreadsheet stand out using Themes.
  • Visually represent numbers and text (as a chart) in your spreadsheet, to make them stand out and easy to understand.

Requirements

Delegates must be confident in using Windows and a mouse. Delegates must be confident with basic maths i.e. addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and also have a basic understanding of how to calculate percentages.


Timetable

Session 1

Getting familiar with the user interface Ribbon at the top of the window; What is a Spreadsheet; Entering Text and Numbers; The Mouse keeps Changing Shape; Saving a Spreadsheet; Using the Autofill feature, Using the Autosum feature, Inserting and Deleting Rows and Columns, Good Spreadsheet Practice.

Session 2

Creating Formulas, Copying Formulae, Using Absolute Cell References in formulas, Printing a Spreadsheet.

Session 3

Formatting cells: Alignment, Number Formats, Column Widths, Borders, Shading, Bold, Italics, Underline, Fonts, Use Themes, Print Preview, Page Setup, Set Print Area, Paper Orientation, Scaling, Headers and Footers, Margins, Conditional Formatting, Cell Styles

Session 4

Types of Charts, Creating Charts using the Keyboard, Editing Charts, Sparklines (2010 only).

The ‘Small Print’

The course will run from 10am to 4:45pm (light cold buffet 1pm to 1:45pm). Please be careful to arrive by 9.45am for registration and refreshments. The course will start precisely on time and it may not be possible to go back over material missed by late arrivals. If you arrive over 30 minutes late you may be asked to leave and attend another day.
